WHS Working Example

WHS : A Working Example

First of all a warning that I have updated my data shown in the table below.
We are currently in dispute with England Golf over all competition data being uploaded off Yellow markers.
If you have played off White markers your Handicap Index will be inaccurate.
Many Seniors who only play Tuesdays and all Ladies will be correct.

Mike Shakeshaft [Competition and Handicap Committee Chair] : Current CONGU Handicap is 21.9
To help us all to understand the new handicapping system we now have an example from the WHS platform.
I hope that this makes it clearer than just reading up about it or watching the videos, it certainly did for me.
Here’s how my new Handicap Index has been worked out

First of all a few terms that appear in my competition data for my last 20 rounds :
Slope : The Slope Rating of the course / tees played, For us this is 127 off White and Red Tees, 126 off Yellow Tees. There are also a 9-hole Ratings.
Adj<usted> Gross : The gross score adjusted by any nett double bogies, this includes NRs. For example if I shot a 7 or an NR on the first at Llanymynech this would become a 6 in the adjusted gross.
Course Rating : For us this is 70.3 off the Whites, 69.6 off the Yellows and 71.5 off the Reds
PCC [Playing Conditions Calculation] : Conditions on the day of play that differed from normal playing conditions to the extent that they significantly impacted performance [eg Course Conditions, Weather, Course Set-up]
The PCC adjustment ranges from -1.0 [easy] to +3.0 [very tough]

Now for the maths ! Let’s hope the WHS computers will be doing all this !
Score Differential : [Adjusted Gross – Course Rating – PCC] * [113 / Slope Rating].
For example, row 1 : [103 – 70.3 – 0 {= 32.7}] * [113 / 127 = {0.89}] = 29.1
Handicap Index : The average of the 8 lowest Score Differentials from the last 20, those rows highlighted in pink and a star. That is 20.4 [163.2 / 8]

Please note this will be adjusted by the Slope of the course when you next play up to a Course Handicap using the Course Handicap Table [see bottom of page, if off the White Tees, 20.4 becomes 23]
In some cases this may differ off the Yellow Tees
